The Internet is filled with a lot of things that parents might not feel are acceptable for their children to view, including porn sites, crude language, violent video games, sex and drugs; all of which are available to children who know how to type in specific keywords into a search engine. Whatever kind of service you have, whether from wildblue, or others, these things are available to anyone. This access to unacceptable content makes many parents feel uneasy about the Internet, which is why many operating systems have developed built in parental controls. Windows has a built in parental control setting that allows parents to control how their children use the computer. Setting up the parental controls on a Windows computer is very simple.

The first step to setting up parental controls on a Windows computer is to make every child set up a standard user account that you wish to add parental controls to. This will allow you to apply the settings to a specific user.

The second step to installing parental controls is to bring up the parental control options. Parental options can be found by clicking on the Start button and looking under Control Panel. There will be an icon titled User Accounts which will need to be clicked on. Once clicked, an option for Parental Controls will come up. If you have set up an administrative password, the system will ask you to type in the password so that it can verify that you can change the settings.

The last step to installing parental controls is to figure out what type of parental controls you wish to apply to the computer user. These parental controls include web restrictions, time limits, restricting games and allowing/denying specific programs. A parent can use multiple parental control options. You can restrict what programs are played by setting the program setting, block certain websites by using the web restriction option and put a time limit on how long the user can use the computer.
