Parental Controls and Encouraging Appropriate Software

As parents. it becomes difficult when it comes down to limiting your child’s exposure to negative influences with technology. Although it is not exclusive with regard to the Internet – such as television and video games – online threats are perhaps most central to many parents’ minds (both in content and owing to difficulty in protection, such as compared to the two earlier examples).

If you find yourself on this boat, there are some tips that you can take. Before worrying about anything technical, one of the best things you can do is talk with your child and explain your worries. You certainly can’t protect them from every influence on the Internet, and – unless you keep them from the Internet (not recommended!) – they will probably come across them at some point. Preparing your child and explaining why certain things are wrong is a great step.

Of course, there are steps that need to be taken in regards to security for your children. If your children are allowed to participate in social networking websites, such as Facebook, make sure you limit their privacy settings. Only friends and family should be able to view their profile. This goes for anything else that may contain your child’s personal information.

There are also plenty choices in regard to parental controls for software. You will need to do a bit of research, as there are a number of different features, which all come with their own set of advantages and limitations. You may find something that is age-appropriate.

Apart from the Internet make sure your children are engaged in age-appropriate software. Once your child is protected from the Internet and anything that is too mature for them in terms of software, your anxiety level should lessen. Keep talking with your children about negative things they may come across and encourage positive computer habits.
