Protecting Yourself Online Doesn’t Have to be Complicated

When it comes to online security, there are plenty of ways you can stay safe so you don’t have to worry about people hacking into your information, stealing your prepaid credit cards numbers, or spamming you. Of course, these kinds of things can (and do) happen even to people who are very careful, but your chances of encountering a problem will be far less than they would be if you didn’t pay close attention to what you were doing online and guard your information. Don’t give personal information out online, even to ‘friends’ on your social network. It’s best to keep everything to yourself and provide only information that doesn’t include where you are or any specifics about your life.

It’s also important to guard your email address and other personal information. The more people you give these kinds of things out to, the more likely it will be that someone will use your information in the wrong way. That could mean tons of spam in your inbox, but it could also mean a hacker trying to get into you banking, PayPal, and other accounts. That’s not a good feeling, even if the hacker doesn’t succeed. When people online ask for personal information, find out why they want it and what kind of privacy policy they have before you give it out.

If you don’t pay close attention to your personal information, someone else will – and that’s generally never a good thing. In short, don’t tell all you know. You can still be friendly and share a lot of information with people without revealing personal secrets that aren’t anyone else’s business. Don’t post to your social networks that you’re leaving your house and will be gone all day, for example, because anyone who knows where you live now knows your house is empty and an easy target. Be careful what you put out there, and you’ll have fewer worries.
